Nigerian investors are not just chasing returns anymore. Here is what changed.
For quite some time, the assumption in the investment world was straightforward: investors go wherever they see the highest returns. Offer less, and they are quick to look elsewhere. But as the market evolves, this thinking does not capture what is happening today as investors are paying attention to far more than just the numbers.
What we are seeing at Regius Asset Management in 2026 is that clients are thinking about their money more comprehensively, and that shift is visible in the conversations they have with us. A client who would previously open a meeting by asking about rates is now asking something else first: Who else invests with you? How long have you been operating? What happens if something goes wrong? Are you regulated, and can I verify it? These are the questions of investors who have realised that a good return from a firm they cannot verify carries a risk that does not show up in the rate.
Investors have always wanted to know who they are investing with, but what has changed is how much they can verify themselves. Today, the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) makes it easy for investors to check a firm's license status, including via USSD code. Many other countries have similar tools that let investors confirm whether a business is properly regulated. This means that investors can check a firm's credentials before a meeting, not just rely on what they hear from others.
This shift is the result of years of investor education and better regulatory infrastructure. Today’s retail investor, whether in Nigeria or anywhere else, is more aware of risk and regulation than ever before. That does not mean scams and risk have gone away, but it does mean investors are asking better questions and expecting honest answers. We see every day that investors are putting more weight on transparency and regulation when deciding where to put their money, which signals that risk management is becoming more important for everyday investors.
At Regius, we find this encouraging because it reflects the standards we have built. We have maintained full regulatory compliance since inception. Our SEC licence is active and verifiable. When clients ask us hard questions, we answer them. That kind of scrutiny keeps us honest and builds relationships that last beyond a single investment cycle.
Our clients are showing us something important. Investors are not choosing between safety and returns. They are asking for both, and they are getting better at knowing which firms can genuinely deliver on that promise.
